Onsite skin checks

Due to the high prevalence of skin cancer in Australia, it is important to promote sun safe practices in the workplace, regardless of employees’ roles or time spent outdoors. Onsite skin checks are proactive measures to help improve sun safe behaviours and prevent ongoing skin damage.

The good news is, 95% of skin cancers can be successfully treated if detected early, so encourage your employees to take a few minutes out of their day for a skin check.

What to expect

The Skin Check is offered at two levels:

  • Level 1 includes a 10-minute examination of sun exposed areas of the body e.g. face, neck, hands, forearms to elbows. Participants may also be able to highlight any particular areas of concern if time permits.
  • Level 2 includes a 15-minute examination of the participant’s full body. This check requires participants to remove all clothing, while underwear is left on. A gown is provided for this check.

The experienced Dermatoscopists use a dermatoscope (a specialised hand-held skin instrument which has x 12 magnification) to examine areas exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Employees are also educated on preventative measures, such as how to conduct a self-examination to identify new or changing lesions and sun damage and how to differentiate between a mole and the possible signs and symptoms of melanoma, and other skin cancers. If further follow-up is required, the employee will be referred on to their chosen GP or specialist.

We recommend introducing the Skin Check service in conjunction with a group education session on sun safety or cancer awareness to further help inform and educate employees.
